From Jennifer Kyrnin, your Guide to Web Design / HTML
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and that you're ready to start off 2012 with an even better website and more skills as a web designer! I wanted to start out the new year with a topic that many freelance designers forget about--proposal writing. Sometimes you have to compete with other design firms to get a job, and writing a good, clear proposal is a great way to do that. Or, you can do like Hans Whitaker does and submit proposals to companies that might not have a website already. Either way, a good proposal is a way to get your foot in the door and get new clients. I also realized that while people may know how to add CSS to a document, that doesn't mean that you know which method is best. And finally, more than just proposals, if you want to get started in 2012 as a web design freelancer, there are many things you should know. I've collected several articles together to show you where to start.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of different web editors available for you to use. I have a script to help you find the perfect web page editor, but sometimes it's easier to see reviews of editors by other people and decide based on their opinions. I have received several new web editor reviews from other About.com readers. Some interesting ones that have just come in include:
five stars IMCreator
four stars Aptana Studio 3
five stars Flux 3.2
two stars Xara Designer 7

You may know there are three different ways you can include style sheets in your web pages, but do you know how to choose the best method for the job? Find out how to choose the best method for what your page or site needs.

Freelancing
Freelance web development is a very common way for web designers to earn money doing something they love. In fact, the majority of web designers do at least some of their work as freelancers, many more than those who work full time for a non-web design company. If you want to do web design as a full-time job, you should definitely look into doing freelancing. I have written many articles on doing freelance web design, covering many topics.

Poll: What have you tried to increase interaction with your
One of my favorite things about building and maintaining websites are the people I meet and interact with. There are readers on this site that have been posting comments for many years and I feel like we almost know each other in some ways. This is a lot of fun. But increasing interaction and community on a website can be difficult. There are lots of ways you can go about it. What have you tried? Vote Now View Results
