Lesson 8: Namespaces
Jennifer Kyrnin
From Jennifer Kyrnin, your Guide to Web Design / HTML
Namespaces are critical components in XML design; however, they tend to be a bit conceptual. Think of a namespace as a last name for elements. Last names are what individualize a person. Without them it would be difficult to distinguish one Mary from the next. This is true for namespaces, as well. As you progress down the path of XML education, you will find namespaces at every turn.

Namespaces - A Closer Look
Namespaces are a significant part of XML. Although the idea seems complicated, they are actually straightforward. This article provides definitions and sample code that shows the role that a namespace plays in XML construction.

URI - Uniform Resource Identifier
This article gives you a better understanding of one namespace component, the URI, or uniform resource identifier. A URI provides a web address that the processor can refer to in regards to namespaces. Without a URI, the namespace has little meaning. You find the URI throughout XML coding. It is as vital as the namespace itself.

How to Write Your First XML Schema
This is a repeat, but it will give you a chance to see the namespace in action. Schema is one way to bring rules to a browser that helps validate XML code. Without the namespace, a schema does not work. A second look at this tutorial will help you put the pieces of the namespace together.

Homework
Homework for Lesson 8
Continue practicing writing XML code. Create an XML file for your CD collection and favorite music then write a schema for the file once complete. Practice using namespaces and double check your syntax against the sample code in the tutorials.

If you would like help with the homework, or want to discuss the class, you can do so in the HTML / XML Forum.
