From Jennifer Kyrnin, your Guide to Web Design / HTML
Background images are becoming more and more common on web pages. People use them with sprites to create navigation menus and add decorations to the page and background images can help you add texture to your pages. But one thing that is becoming less relevant to me is Google. Find out more about why I don't use them for search any more.

An online class can be a great way to learn web design. I offer several free classes here on this site. But there are lots of others to choose from. But how do you know if you're signing up for a good course or not? I have received the following reviews of online web design courses from other About.com readers that can help you choose the online class that is right for you:
three stars Lynda.com Online Web Design Classes
five stars Intro to CSS and XHTML from Ed2Go
five stars Online Dreamweaver Course

Background Images are Becoming Critical in Web Designs
One way to really dress up a web page is to use background images. These are images that either set a mood or add some texture or tone to the page. For example, here is an example of a page with a grey background where a simple repeating image is used instead of flat color. But you can also use background images as decorations and much more.

Why Google has become less relevant to me
If you write or build content-driven websites, you know how important Google and the other search engines are. But lately, Google seems to have gone off the rails. Their ideas for improving search seem to be actually hurting the results. I think that Google is relying too much on algorithms, and frankly I think they are over-optimizing their search results. Find out why I have switched to Bing for nearly all my searches these days.

Poll: Do you think color symbolism matters in web design?
Color symbolism can be very important to some people but is it important in web design? Understanding what colors mean in cultures other than your own (see my Color Symbolism Chart for more help) might make a difference to your pageviews. But do you think it matters in your designs?
