Lesson 9: XSL
Jennifer Kyrnin
From Jennifer Kyrnin, your Guide to Web Design / HTML
Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) is what makes XML work. XSL gives you a chance to take everything you know about XML and website design and put it together to create a powerful platform. Style sheets are formatting files that describe how you want something to look. XML cannot work by itself. It is a locked suitcase missing a key. XSL is the key that opens the container. XSL is a family of languages that all have one goal, to gather data from a core XML document and present it.

Things You Need:
Text Editor
A basic text editor like Notepad for Windows or TextEdit for Macintosh.

Learn XSL
What is XSL
This gives you the basic what and why of Extensible Stylesheet Language. The important thing to wrap your head around when considering XSL is that it has more than one facet. This article discusses the various components that function within the XSL family. XSL has two purposes, to validate XML and to present it. This article puts the pieces together to make that happen.

What is the Relationship between XSL, XSLT and XSL-FO
The different languages that fall into the XSL family can be confusing. When you start to learn about formatting, it is necessary to know the individual components. This article breaks down three of the main parts that make up XML formatting.

How to Understand Family Relationships in XML Path Language
Now it is time to start learning how each piece comes together. XPath is something you are going to use with every XSL language. It is the thread that ties everything together. The core of XPath is the family relationships and the tree structure. This tutorial walks you through developing an organizational path for your XML code.

Homework
Homework for Lesson 9
Take some of your practice XML files and write out a tree structure for them. The heretical formation of XML is a fundamental concept that you need to understand before advancing to formatting. Keep creating tree structures for your files until you understand the how the lineage, such as grandparent element and child element, fits together.
